Sur La Table

Kudos to Sur La Table!

Kudos to Holly Howarth for giving me the gift card a year ago that I "misplaced" and then finally found only weeks before it expired

Kudos to "Date night in Mexico City" the name of our cooking class

Kudos to Chef Kyle (or as Jim called him: Coach Kyle) for the 6 delicious recipes (eating more than a pregnant woman should at 8:00 p.m.) and wonderful instruction

AND finally, Kudos to the 15% off coupon (good only that night) that we would have liked to use on the Vitamix blender had it not been priced at $499.00 but instead left with a belly full of food and heartburn that would kill a cow hitting at 1:00 A.M.-

I guess a final Kudos to Tums inc. would be appropriate here

Fart Fan - Guest Blog by Jim Hall

We are finishing the rest of our basement and I am down there with our electrician. We start talking fans in the bathroom. He refers to it as a "Fart Fan". I've got to tell you this really bothered me and I am not sure why. I am a dude. I am passing stuff out of my rear all the time. There have been times when I have never laughed so hard as to the sound and duration of a fart. So why does calling it a fart fan bug me? Then the heating guy comes by and I ask him about running an exhaust line for the fan in the bathroom. He says "yea I can run a fart fan exhaust" and I am thinking why is everyone calling it that. You need to stop, please. Refer to it as a "not so pleasant smell expulsion fan". Then I would be able to talk to you about it.

Also, when I am talking to the electrician, he asked if I want a quiet "Fart Fan" or a noisy one. What? Why in the H.E. double hockey sticks would you want a quiet "not so pleasant smell expulsion fan". One of the main reasons you have the fan is to hide the noise that is occurring in the bathroom. I dont like hearing the noise when I am in there, so I assume nobody else outside the bathroom will either.

Please join me in my "Renaming the Fart Fan" campaign. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Fa La La La La

It's over! I did it!

I am officially done with Christmas shopping and I couldn't be happier!

AHHHHH (big sigh of relief)

I bought my final gift last night

Everyone is accounted for

Now I just have to start wrapping all the stuff

Is it tacky to just put things in black grocery bags and tie them up with a bow?

Or maybe not wrap anything at all?

With this tough economy who can afford paper and bows?
OK really, who can afford tylenol, a massage, treats, ample coke and take out for lunch. . .
for the next 2 weeks that it will take me to do it all. :)

The Reflections contest theme this year was "WOW".
Anna decided to enter the photography category
Aunt Nancee took a Saturday and spent it with Anna taking really cool pictures and teaching her the art of doing so.
Here's the picture she entered:
Here's the award she won tonight for her awesome picture:

"WOW!" Congratulations Anna! You are so amazing and we are so proud of you!!!!!

About ten years ago at the Ricks College bookstore I made my first homemaker/adult purchase: The Martha Stewart Cookbook. I felt so cool and was so excited to become the culinary genius I thought it would make me. Well much to my shagrin, I never really used it until now. I like plan out my menus for two weeks, buy all the groceries and then I never have to worry about what to cook while I am up to my arm pits in spelling, sunshine math(nothing sunny about fractions!) and a screaming baby.

This is the review I read today on a classic cookbook that many prodigies of Martha own:

Martha Stewart Cookbook
makes you feel as though a fine and interesting meal is always possible -- even in winter, when the selection of produce can be pretty slim. Some the more inventive recipes include sauerkraut and fresh cabbage with browned mushrooms, fettuccini with pumpkin cream sauce, and sole cerviche mixed with grapefruit slices.

Yah, well here's mine:

Martha Stewart Cookbook makes you feel as though a dull and tasteless concocted meal is always possible--even in winter when the selection of produce can be pretty slim should you find yourself living in Kosovo. Some of the more inventive recipes ought not to be served to your family let alone any human aqcuintance you might have. This is a book you will want to keep on your shelf unless you are in need of a gag white elephant gift. Wrap up this sucker and companion it with sauerkraut and sole-talk about a hit!

Needless to say- after one week of crappy meals, I am now stuck with a weeks worth of useless recipes and the foods that go with them. In fact Right now as I type, Jim is picking up dinner at WENDY'S :)

worst day

Kirsten came home from school today and announced: "Today was the worst day in the world of Utah, EVER!" (her exact words). Apparently there was a scuffle at school while waiting in line for the bus. The girls were accused of butting in line, so they got sent to the back of the line which is a HUGE deal since they pride themselves on getting right to the front daily. The minute that bell rings Kirsten races outside to secure her place and save a spot for her sister Anna. (I was informed that family is allowed to Butt, just not friends).
Anyway-they both were equally upset by what happened and denied butting. When we asked if they were able to explain the situation to the teacher on BUS DUTY Anna said "Oh no. You Don't want to talk to this teacher. She has a beard!"
A Beard?!! "Well, just a lot of dark hair down around her chin and neck-it's so weird. The kids think she looks like a man and that she could be in the circus, it's that bad."
Now that is bad! This poor woman lives the worst day in the world of Utah, EVER!-every day! You can hardly blame the poor woman for sending kids to the back of the line.
And let's be honest- if it weren't for a really good pair of tweezers and excellent lighting I too would be living that sad tale.
Back of the line kid!

hiding place

I heard laughing and yelling coming from the laundry room bathroom. Then I heard Kirsten yell "Mom, come here quick!" I went to the bathroom, opened the door and I didn't see a soul until Kirst opened the door and they both screamed/yelled BOO!!!
And next time I can't find Lilly, I hope this is where she is, rather than downstairs (yes she has now mastered the art of going down stairs) eating the cat food. Could be worse I guess-she could be eating the Kitty Litter. :)

So long Soccer!

It's the end of a successful season.

No they didn't take state or even win all of their games (They finished 2-7)

But it was Kirsten's first season playing soccer, she played in every game and loved every minute of it.

We are so proud of her and her true grit. It was awesome watching her run up and down that field with a look that would scare any opponent. She was fabulous and she has even mentioned doing it again next year.

A few days ago, her coach had a party at Classic Skate. It was Kirsten's first time on roller skates and so I went to skate around with her. Well wouldn't ya know, it was the first time for practically every girl there. Everyone was falling on their backsides and laughing out loud (after letting out a small yell and moan of course)A tear found it's way to my eye as two of her soccer buddies came up, took her by each hand and said "come on Kirst, let's skate and fall together!" That was my cue to leave.

She had a blast with all of her soccer buddies that night.
She had a blast with all of her soccer buddies on the field.
She made new friends who just adore her.
She didn't make a goal or much less kick the ball.
But, soccer was a success this year and man did she score!

last day of UEA

Just a little shout out to dad who after getting himself ready for work this morning made sure to get the girls up for school too-at 6:45 A.M. asking who was showering and who was practicing.

The girls quickly let him know exactly who was doing what. . . "DAD!!!!!!"

No school today :)

Hon- you're the best! I just love that you help out by getting the girls up in the morning while I take care of the baby. Love your guts!

UEA Weekend

Being the FUN MOM that I am, I decided to take the girls down to sunny, warm St George to frolic in the sun and swim to their hearts content.

After packing the car and praying for safety we headed off for what was to be the best UEA break ever. Just the girls and me. I was even in cool mom mode too: candy gallore, movies to watch, fun music, and I had plans to eat out every night and say yes to Kirsten when she asked if she could get a coke. Yes this was it and we were so excited.

Well about 2 hours into the trip as we were ascending the gigantic hill past Scipio, the burb died. The engine just stopped and the irony is that I was just thinking "hmmmm I wonder if this is the hill Elder Holland talks about in his talk 'An High Priets of Good Things to Come' (super good talk BTW) and then nothing-it turned off and I coasted as far to the top of that hill as I could and piled off at Exit 184.

I had no idea what to do and in an attempt to find my purse and call AAA I realized that my wallet was missing. So I call my dear husband Jim who incidentally was at home sick with the flu. While he spent the next 30 minutes making arrangements I had a bonding moment or two doing the following:

*We said a prayer together asking that everything would be all right

*We said another prayer asking for help

*I taught the girls how to pee off of the side rail of a suburban

*We waved at the many cars that had the audacity to pass a pregnant mom holding a baby with 2 girls by her side

*We cheered as Larry the tow truck guy came to save us

* We laughed again as we crammed into the front of his tow truck all the way back to Draper (roughly a 2 hour drive)
*Seeing Jim/dad at the repair garage and being elated at his presence

*Finding my wallet that had fallen out of my purse at home

I had a moment today as I sat in the front seat of that tow truck holding Lilly on my lap with Kirst asleep on my side and Anna resting on Kirst. I was mom in the full sense of the word. I was responsible for these girls -how overwhelming is that? There we were stranded on the freeway, just the four of us and everything turned out ok. No freak outs-but there were few disappointed hearts (including mine) at the thought of going back to Draper. But we did manage to laugh about it and in the words of Elder Wirthlin's mother: "Come what may and love it" were resounding in my head. At least we are all alive and the one creepy guy who stopped to help us didn't kill us.

Creepy guy gets out of the car wearing glasses and has a notepad and pen in his front pocket (probably with a list of names of people he's killed)
Guy:"you girls ok?"
Me: We're ok thanks for stopping though
Guy: Are you all alone? No husband?
Me: Ummm the tow truck guy just called and is only a few miles away
Guy: ohhh ok (stands there for a bit)
Me: well thanks anyway-you are so kind. Come on girls let's get our bags and get ready for the tow truck

The Burb died 5 miles outside of a city that happened to have Triple A. Lilly didn't sleep at all which is weird since the ride down was during her nap time yet she slept the entire time in the tow truck back to Draper. Triple A only covers 100 miles of towing and from Scipio to Draper which is roughly that so we only had to pay $40 for the tow.

Monday, October 13, 2008

Well we spent the evening at the ER last night. Our dear, kind, doctor of a home teacher recommended Jim go in after looking at his right calf.

Last week Jim's leg was feeling a bit sore and by Friday it was swollen, red and warm to the touch. He tried some antibiotics and nothing changed so off the the ER we went.

Here are some of the highlights of the evening:

*We had been bottling salsa all day and we really wreaked of it! I was kinda grossing myself out/craving mexican food. When the Tech came in to take Jim's blood pressure/temp the first thing he said was: "Wow it smells like Salsa in here! Does anyone have chips? It smells good." (we shamefully admitted to being the cause of the stench-later the 9 week pregnant nurse will notice the smell and not appreciate it as much.)

Jim got wheeled to his private room (cubicle with a curtain) and a lovely gown where he sat and waited for the following visits: Nurse, admin lady, doctor, ultrasound guy, etc.

*After the ultrasound guy did his thing the nurse came in and informed us that: "Well I spoke with the the tech and I have a verbal diagnosis which I am to give to the doctor. He has to come in and talk to you about it, I can't. . . but you do have a couple of blood clots in your leg. They will probably start you on Coumadin but I hope they don't since I personally think it is RAT POISON. It's better if they just give you the shots that you will administer to yourself everyday for the next 6 months or so. But you didn't hear it from me so act surprised when the doctor comes in."

15 minutes later nurse enters the room (doctor never came)

*Nurse: "OK so the doctor wants to go ahead and start you on Coumadin"
Jim: "You mean the RAT POISON?!"
Nurse: "Well it's not THAT bad. But he also wants you to do the shots for a few days. I am going to go ahead and show you how to do it. It's not that hard I promise. Now the best thing to do is to give yourself the shot in the fattiest part of the body-so go ahead and grab a chunk of your belly. Now all you have to do is stick it in and punch the medicine through. In my skinny patients I have them put it in at at 45 degree angle but it looks like you have enough flesh to just stick it in. Go ahead now-the medicine going in hurts way worse than the needle."

20 minutes later the Doctor comes in

Doctor: "well you have a few blood clots but since they are in the leg we are going to go ahead and treat it as an outpatient. If it were in your arm we would have you stay. You will need to be on the blood thinner for about 6 months and the shots for roughly 5 days.
Jim: "Are there any side effects?"
Doctor: "If your Coumadin levels get to high you can bleed internally and ultimately die. Just be sure to see your physician and get your blood checked regularly. Ok you are good to go we will get you your discharge papers and send you home."

Good times! My saint of a mother came over and sat with the kids while we were there. We got home around midnight, Jim got his prescription filled and this morning began with a show and tell to the kids of Daddy putting the needle in the "fattiest part of his body". I'm just glad it was him instead of me, it would have been really hard to find a fatty part of my body! :)

Cravings Gallore!

This has definitely been a weird pregnancy. Well just different from Lilly mainly.

This time I can eat meat- and lots of it. A few weeks ago Jim asked if I had been to Burger King lately and when I sheepishly answered yes he asked " do they know you on a first name basis there?" What's a girl to do? The Jr. Whopper was calling my name (many times in one week to be truthful-oh well!)

This time around I have acne-none of that pregnancy glow. I look like a thirteen year old who's father is constantly reminding her to wash her face at night and "don't forget the clearasil!"

I crave rootbeer, popcorn, meat, candy, Burger King, and today I hit an all time low-Top Ramen. That's right, Top Ramen. I actually cooked and ate an entire bowl of chicken flavored Top Ramen and enjoyed every minute of it. I am quite certain that my blood pressure is off the charts due large in part to the sodium intake that I just consumed.

And should you see me and wonder how far along I am let me go ahead and curb the shock factor. I look 6-7 months and yet I am only a mere 15 weeks.

This is our last baby and I have always said "Go big or go home!" Well, here I am: big at home so what does that say about me? (no rude comments please-I'm a fragile hormonal pregnant lady who is big enough to crush you)

She's 12

Happy Birthday Anna! I can't believe you are 12-I know I haven't been your mom since birth but somehow God has managed to cram 12 years of experience, love, emotion and life lessons into just two years with you.

12 things that I love about you are:

You aren't afraid to show your emotions
You care deeply for those less fortunate
You have single handedly planned a yearly donation drive for the homeless shelter
Your unending help with Lilly
Your eyes
Your deep laugh when something is REALLY funny
Your love and concern for your friends
Your brain-you are so smart!
Your amazing ability to play the piano so well
Your tenacity
Your sensitive heart
Your faith

I am honored and blessed to be your mom. I know it's not what you had in mind and at times it probably would be better if mom Michelle were here. But know that I am trying and that I do love you. I give thanks every night for you and for the lessons you are teaching me. Happy 12th b-day doll and I look forward to many more fabulous years with you!
xoxo mom

Remembering September 11th

I was late for work that day eating my usual bowl of Grapenuts with orange juice (don't ask-it's a family thing) watching the Today show with Matt Lauer and Catie Couric. I remember watching the news as everything unfolded and driving to work in a complete daze.

I taught a different seminary lesson that day.

We watched news reports in bewteen classes.

Some students mourned in silence while others cried out loud.

Some even had fathers in New York and were anxiously awaiting word on their safety.

I will never forget the events of that day.

And today at Anna's insistence we had a family moment of silence. She explained it all to Kirsten and then timed us for one minute. I love that she wears her heart on her sleeve and isn't afraid to show it. I love that she hasn't forgotten and makes sure we haven't either.

Home Again Home Again

I just returned from a 5 day trip to St. Louis. It was the Annual Sister's Weekend and we decided to go visit our old stomping grounds. We moved there back in '87 so granted I didn't live there for long but the fam did and many summers and christmas' were spent there and I have such fond memories of the place.
Some of the highlights:
Staying at Embassy Suites
Prepared breakfast every morning
Sleeping in
Laughing
Shopping
Eating
Seeing the house and old hang-0uts
The Murder Mystery Dinner
Racial Diversity
All of the religion and "Suppers"
Farmers Market
Eating for 2 at Pasta House Co (soooooo good)
Catching up and talking
Missing my family

I used to think that mom's got away so they could rest and take a break. This trip just made me appreciate what I have and in a way, long to be home.
I had such a wonderful time being with my mom and sisters and I love that a tradition started 10 years ago has continued to live on-we haven't missed a year!

first day of school

The first day of school-what a great day. The girls woke up early, showered, did their hair all cute, wore their new outfits and donned their new backpacks/bags. As a special treat Jim got them McDonalds for breakfast (ok truth be known, we were out of eggs and pancake mix and the thought of cooking/smelling eggs that early in the morning was more than my morning sickness could handle! so thanks Jim!)
They were really excited but even more so to be reunited with their best friend: Jody the Bus Driver. I love the stories about Jody's life that they bring home- (and I am sure they excahnge equally as personal stories)

It was a really smooth day and I got so much done-the house has never looked better. I took a moment to enjoy the silence- Until I got a call from a friend in Draper asking if we needed to evacuate. I had no idea what she was talking about until I stepped out on my back porch-Holy Smokes!
I took these photos and sent them to Jim. When I didn't hear from him immediately I called to see if he got them- he was busy watching a fire in West Valley-needless to say, the pictures turned his attention elsewhere!
The fire is contained and everyone is safe. I am so impressed with how fast the emergency crews got to work. It was amazing to me as I watched the helicopters and planes drop water and retardant and to see the fire trucks on the mountain as well as fire trucks from other places manning our stations here. I Love them and the price they are willing to pay for our safety. I want to bake them bread or cookies or something. Write a thank-you note or sing them a song. I am so grateful for people who are braver than I and for people who care more about others than the misanthropist in me!

Flash Gordon

Other than my siblings- did anyone else spend their childhood Saturday nights watching this movie and loving every minute of it? The 80's tale of a football hero who ends up saving the world and his girlfriend Dale from the evil Ming who has green blood (the best part is at the end when he gets stabbed and it oozes out).
It was on TV today and I tried to talk Kirsten into watching it with me-she would have nothing to do with it. Bummer too because it's a really good movie. I'd have to rank it right up there with Time Bandits, Cannon Ball Run and Airplane. Again, really good movies!

guess who's pregnant. . . again

not sure which is better: the fact that my sister did an awesome job doctoring this up or the fact that this was an actual picture taken with real people. . . who look 17.

Either way-it's awesome!!!

silence

Shhhhhh. Do you hear that? It's the sound of nothing. The sound of no one calling my name, no one fighting, no one to cook for, no one to ask me to take them somewhere, no one asking me where something is, no one to harass about doing chores.
It is also the sound of no laughter, telling jokes, hugging, tickling, saying I love you, praying with and tucking in at night, talking about random stuff, and being a mom.
I miss my girls
Can't wait until they come home
7 days is too long
(am I really saying that?!)

The Watson's

My sister Rebecca (from Bakersfield) and her family came for a visit this last week. 7 whole days of fun-she left this morning and I am already missing her. Our days were packed with fun and laughter. We went to Lagoon, Park City, grandma's pool, the Rodeo, did lots of canning, ate tons of good food, told stories, rearranged my parents home, swam and did the slip and slide. Here is some awesome footage of the slip and slide (keep your eyes on the two little boys). I love my family and the fact the when we are together it is always a guaranteed good time!

Color Me Mine

FUN FRIDAY!!! That's what today and every Friday is. We go on an outing and do something fun as a reward for staying on track all week and getting stuff done. The girls picked Color Me Mine - a fun little place where you pick out a piece of overpriced plaster figurine or pottery and pay the equivalent of a mortgage payment to use their paints. Color me Expensive or Color me a Sucker is more like it.
Here's what you're gonna want to do should your daughter decide that she would like to visit this pricey potters/painters playground. Visit your local Michael's where they have $ .69 plaster figurines then hit the paint aisle and buy their craft paint for $.89. Take it home, put on some fun music, serve some snacks and BOOM you got yourself a FUN FRIDAY activity at a FUN price!
Color Me Mine-seriously? "When a loaf of bread looks like a meal" . . . no one has the right to charge anyone $50.00 for 30 minutes of fun (legal fun that is).

donuts

we ran into albertsons really quick yesterday to get bread, carrots and celery. On our way out the bakery caught my eye and so I thought it would be fun to let the girls each pick one treat. Anna picked a glazed donut. Kirsten picked the mother of all donuts. Man if they had these when I was a kid-forget saving up all my money for the "SEV"- the neighborhood baker would have known my name instead of Abu the Sandy 7-11 clerk of 10 years.

We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet

Sunday was Anna's big day!!! She was the primary pianist at the beginning of primary. We have started a new thing in primary: kids who want to play a hymn or primary song on ANY musical instrument will be the prelude music as primary begins. Anna was the first one to do it and she played We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet. She did an amazing job and I am so proud of her. All of the leaders were dying when I told them she had only been playing for a little over a year. She's really good and is learning so fast. I love that she can play so well and play something other than the first three bars of the Star Wars theme song.
Kirsten will be playing in 2 weeks and I'm really excited for the boy who asked if he could play a primary song on his electric guitar! ROCK ON!

slip-n-slide

Jim took Anna to the Journey/Cheap Trick/ Heart concert last night. Kirsten was feeling a bit left out so she and I planned a girls party for her. She invited all of the girls in the neighborhood who were her age and she made invitations that said "You are invited to a slip-n-slide party!"
She was so excited and so were all of her friends. Slip-n-slide, new cool pool, hot dogs and then a movie afterwards-pretty perfect huh? That's what I thought too until I found out that the Target, Walmart and K-mart all happened to be out of slip-n-slides.
So I went old school and made a slip-n-slide the way it was done in "da hood"=Sandy, Utah. We used plastic sheeting found in the garage and tent stakes to secure it to the ground. We ran sprinklers along the side of it and put dish soap all over it for maximum slide-ability.
The party was awesome and the home made slip-n-slide, a total hit! Next week I might even build a soap-box car for the kids and tell them race it down a really big hill.

7/11

just when I didn't think life could get any better...it did! Today's date is 7-11 and so guess who is giving out FREE Slurpees all day long?! That's right, the 7-11. I would like to thank Addie Cragun a little neighborhood girl for telling me and then begging me to take her and Kirsten. We were out running errands and she shouted from the back of the burb: "Hey today is free slurpees at the 7-11. Let's go get one, who's with me?!" I laughed and thought "well I am the coloest mom- so I think I'll oblige her. The 7-11 is on our way home- what will it hurt?"
So we got there and saw an unusually high volume of people walking out with slurpees. hmmmm We walked inside and I went up to the man sporting a red smock, pierced ears and a long pony-tail. I asked in a "this probably isn't true but. . ." tone: "is it true you are giving out free slurpess today?" He replied "yup, all day long". You would have thought I was 10 years old and I had just ridden my bike to the SEV with my pockets full of all the spare change I could find in the station wagon risking my life to cross the busy road all in the hopes that this rumor was true.
I yelped "Really? Oh my gosh I can't believe it. I love this place! I love slurpees! It makes me proud to be an Amiercan I almost want to break out in song! Girls, this is what it means to be an American!"
What made it even better was that they had my two favorite flavors: pina colada and banana. We got our slurpees and basked in the knowledge that 7-11 comes again next year and we will for sure be taking advantage of our inalienable rights to a free slurpee!!!!!

we're back!

It's been a while. . . I know. So much has happened that there is no way I could possibly blog about it all SO if you want to know more about: Jim's knee surgery, our road trip to the Grand Canyon, our 1 night stay at Jacob Lake (also known as "the dump" by kirsten), the plethora of snacks we packed for the trip, swim lessons, kirsten jumping off of the diving block for the first time, Lilly taking her first steps and is now walking, the Stadium of Fire Hannah Montana concert, Anna puking twice on the side of the road, Fireworks show with the Erickson's that was out of this world and uncle Scott nearly getting hauled off to jail; you can call us and we would love to tell you the story.
But today I am back on track. I can't believe it is July and here we are in the thick of summer. Last night I tried to resurrect our little inflatable pool. It served us well last summer and even a few weeks into this one but last night it gave up the ghost. No more little summer pool.

SO I did what any cool mom would do, I bought us a new summer pool-new and improved summer pool. Here she is:
Yup that is indeed a bench that you see and did you notice the cup holders on the side? If I could just hook up a TV out there, rig the cable and fill my cooler with drinks. . . ladies- get a babysitter cuz summer has officially begun!
Oh but I will be sure to fill the pool myself since Kirsten thought it wold be a good idea to add soap as it was filling. I mean who doesn't want a gigantic bubble pool?
